Demonstrating at NCECA 2012 – Seattle, WA

Filed under: events, exhibitions, general, images, workshops — christaassad @ 5:08 pm

What an honor – I’ve been invited to demonstrate at this year’s national ceramic arts conference, NCECA, scheduled for March 28-31 in Seattle. I’ve been in attendance at nearly every NCECA since 1991 - 20 years now – so it’s an exciting thought to imagine myself hamming it up on the main stage. AND I’ll be joined by Jason Walker (same stage – very cool!) and my clay heroes, Walter Keeler and Tip Toland. Fantastic! Jason Walker and I will also be presenting solo exhibitions side by side at the fabulous Friesen Abmeyer Fine Art Gallery in downtown Seattle. Stay tuned for more details announcing that event.

Hope to see you at the conference – come introduce yourself and say hi…don’t be shy,

xo

Thank you, Anderson Ranch & Harvey Meadows Gallery!

Filed under: events, exhibitions, images, workshops — christaassad @ 9:40 pm

Is it possible to be nostalgic for something that finished just two weeks ago? Apparently so, as I am feeling sappy-sad for my much-anticipated, now-past workshop at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, CO. We had so much fun! I know I am speaking for my whole class here, but honestly, we bonded. No one wanted to go home.

I was also most fortunate to have a very successful show at the fabulous Harvey Meadows Gallery in Aspen Highlands Center. I think there are a few pieces still available – thanks to Alleghany and Sam for rockin’ it for me!

I sure hope I’ll get invited back – missing you, Aspen/Snowmass… xox christa

It is a high honor to be showing along side Mr. Brad Miller! Thanks to Alleghany and Sam for the exciting double bill at Harvey Meadows Gallery, and to Beth for her gorgeous poster design. Can’t wait to see you all on Aug. 22 – I arrive in Aspen the day before to lead a 2-week workshop on Teapots at Anderson Ranch Arts Center, so watch out Rockies, here I come!

Summer Workshops are Here!

Filed under: events, images, workshops — christaassad @ 3:54 pm

I have to admit, I’ve had a pretty relaxing summer so far – no serious responsibilities, lots of croquet and cocktails, but oh yes – some new art on the horizon! (stay tuned)

Soon I head to Anderson Ranch Arts Center, tucked away in the Rockies in gorgeous Snowmass Village, CO, to lead a 2-week workshop on teapots. There’s probably still room left for one or two of you out there…and if you need a little encouragement, here’s one of my all-time favorite workshop pics (this one is from last year’s class at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts). This particular group was all-star material, right down to my amazing assistant, Mr. Josh Copus. Josh and I surprised the class with our hokey, “Corny as a Uni-horn” tees from downtown Gatlinburg…and they surprised us by having their shirts airbrushed to match! Here’s to you guys!

AMOCA presents Cut and Construct, an intensive workshop with Christa Assad. She will be using the wheel as a springboard for idea and process. Join her in exploring the potential compositions of thrown and hand-built parts, and seeing these elements as building blocks with unlimited possibilities. Besides the demonstration, the workshop will include brunch, both days, a lecture on Saturday afternoon, and a time to meet the artist and other attendees.

When paired with AMOCA’s exhibition,Ceramics for the New Millennium, a display of technical ceramics including computer chips, spacecraft tiles, replacement hip joints, and solar panels, Christa Assad’s ceramic work might seem a bit out of place. However, an interesting parallel exists. Assad chose the electrical “transformer” of the 1950s as a symbol for exploration of obsolete objects and structures. In AMOCA’s Ceramics for the New Millennium, early ceramic transformers are exhibited side-by-side with the latest in electronics. Both old and new were made possible by the unique properties of ceramic materials – the absence of electrical conductivity.

A resident of Berkeley, California, Assad is a teacher, traveler and full-time ceramicist.  With a MFA from Indiana University, Assad’s work is in the permanent collections of The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, The Ceramic Research Center at Arizona State University Museum, and The Penn State Fulbright Scholar Collection, and numerous private collections.

Join me at the Alabama Clay Conference: Feb. 18-20!

Filed under: Blogroll, events, images, workshops — christaassad @ 8:40 pm

On Wednesday I hop onto yet another jet plane – this one headed for Mobile, Alabama (my first visit to this great state!) to demonstrate at the Alabama Clay Conference. Word on the streets is that this is a VERY fun conference – I heard from a reliable source that it’s even MORE fun than a certain other ceramic conference coming up (which I also will attend, but will not be presenting)…SO, get yourself registered before they run out of space, and join this more intimate-sized event that is certain to rock your world!

FERRIN GALLERY, Pittsfield, MAChrista Assad’s solo exhibition, Vestigial Tales, opens at Ferrin Gallery with preview on Thursday, September 16 and public reception on Saturday, September 25th.

Vestigial Tales, a series of sculptural forms based on objects and architecture is Assad’s first solo at the gallery.  Designed and produced in her San Francisco studio, Assad’s work pays homage to American industry in transition. Assad explains, “Whether architectural, biological, or mechanical in origin, vestigial objects and their history of use both perplex and attract me.”

The origin of this show began when Assad visited Pittsfield, MA during the summer of 2009.  Inspired by the rapidly changing city, she sought out a single object to interpret for her upcoming solo show.  Her search produced image from the Smithsonian’s archives of a transformer manufactured by General Electric in Pittsfield.  Seeking additional information, she discovered how it symbolized the transitions taking place in the region and by extension, the world.  The image of the large transformer from the 50′s became became the starting point for her show of sculptural forms based on vestigial buildings and objects.

For Assad, an artist whose first career aspirations were aerospace engineering, the “transformer” is symbolic of the transition taking place from creativity in industry to creative industries.  The electrical transformer was invented in Pittsfield by William Stanley and produced by General Electric.  These objects literally “transformed” high voltage current to low voltage thus delivering useable electricity.  Except for the plastics division which is owned by SABIC, the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation, the GE plant is now closed and in the process of being disassembled.  The city and the region are still recovering from the loss of GE, other manufacturing companies and the aftereffects of their closing on local employment and the environment.  With Pittsfield and the Berkshires transitioning into a broader based economy – specifically, the creative economy, the concept for Assad’s show also represents a transformation in her own career.  Starting her studies in aerospace engineering, she soon realized her capacity for three-dimensional design was coupled with an equal interest in building and transitioned into the more physical realm of making art.  She has spent the last 20 years working in the studio primarily as a utilitarian potter; her solo show, Vestigial Tales is the first to explore conceptually based ceramic sculpture.

Assad’s original Transformer Teapot, produced in spring 2010 and exhibited by Ferrin Gallery in “ReObjectification” was acquired by The Kamm Teapot Foundation.

A resident of San Francisco, California, Assad is a teacher, traveler and full-time ceramicist.  With a MFA from Indiana University, Assad’s work is in the permanent collections of The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, The Ceramic Research Center at Arizona State University Museum, and The Penn State Fulbright Scholar Collection, and numerous private collections.

In conjunction with Assad’s show at Ferrin Gallery, her visit includes a full schedule of research, talks, workshops and demonstrations taking place at Ferrin Gallery, Pittsfield, MA; IS183 Art School, Stockbridge, MA; Simon’s Rock College, Great Barrington, MA and the Harvard Ceramics, Allston, MA.
