AMOCA presents Cut and Construct, an intensive workshop with Christa Assad. She will be using the wheel as a springboard for idea and process. Join her in exploring the potential compositions of thrown and hand-built parts, and seeing these elements as building blocks with unlimited possibilities. Besides the demonstration, the workshop will include brunch, both days, a lecture on Saturday afternoon, and a time to meet the artist and other attendees.

When paired with AMOCA’s exhibition,Ceramics for the New Millennium, a display of technical ceramics including computer chips, spacecraft tiles, replacement hip joints, and solar panels, Christa Assad’s ceramic work might seem a bit out of place. However, an interesting parallel exists. Assad chose the electrical “transformer” of the 1950s as a symbol for exploration of obsolete objects and structures. In AMOCA’s Ceramics for the New Millennium, early ceramic transformers are exhibited side-by-side with the latest in electronics. Both old and new were made possible by the unique properties of ceramic materials – the absence of electrical conductivity.

A resident of Berkeley, California, Assad is a teacher, traveler and full-time ceramicist.  With a MFA from Indiana University, Assad’s work is in the permanent collections of The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, The Ceramic Research Center at Arizona State University Museum, and The Penn State Fulbright Scholar Collection, and numerous private collections.
Cost: $145 AMOCA Members; $165 non-members
